"You Sound Sexy"
Margaret Morgan's solo exhibition, entitled "Church", plays upon the metaphysics of modern hygiene. Featuring photographs taken from an archive the artist has collected over twenty years, "Church" focuses on the toilet, the ambiguous icon of America's twentieth century. Shiny-bright, promising unparalleled cleanliness, the porcelain fixture appears here at once effacing the body and yet strangely suggestive of it as well.
Margaret Morgan received her MFA at University of California, Irvine, and participated in the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, New York. Her work has been exhibited at the Australian Center for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, the University of California Irvine Gallery, Grand Arts, Kansas City, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
In the project space, Susan Silton presents "You Sound Sexy", a video installation addressing the perception of voice as it pertains to sexuality and sexual identity. Inspired by reactions to the artist's unusually low and uneven voice due to a polyp on her vocal cords, "You Sound Sexy" calls to mind the adjectives describing a sexually appealing woman: husky, breathy, raspy, and their opposites: shrill, squeaky, and whiny.
Susan Silton is currently preparing solo exhibitions at the JK Gallery, London, and at California State University, San Bernadino.
The gallery is located at 5363 Wilshire Boulevard, two blocks west of La Brea Avenue, between Detroit and Cloverdale. Gallery Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 12 - 6 pm and by appointment.
